Howdy, folks. My last post on here was in late July. Would you believe me if I said that I haven’t fully finished a book since then?
No? Good. Because that would be a cruel lie.
Since reading Of Mice and Men, I’ve actually read four books! I just have not had the time to sit down here and tap out a review of them for your perusal and enjoyment.
The reason? Ah, it’s been, truly, busier than its ever been. I’m on the Science and Technology Law Review at school, I’m on a mock trial team, working two jobs, and in sixteen credit hours of class. I’m enjoying everything I’m doing and I loathe past Mackenzie for being an insufferable try-hard.
Ergo—this update. Thank you for following along on this newsletter. Know that when September ends, I’ll be much less busy and have more regular updates as (I hope) I have more time for leisure reading.
Book Reviews to Come:
On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to Be Good
Author: Elise Loehnen
Author: Lucas Alves
Also, this was Mack’s first e-arc !!!
Author: Rebecca Yarros
Author: Anthony Doerr
Author: R.F. Kuang, of Babel fame.
Alas, my counting’s gone to shite. I’ve read five books since July.
What am I currently reading?
Well, My law school books. Real fun stuff, folks! Also, don’t freaking judge me for my reading habits. I am, presently, reading seven different books. No seriously…
All the Gold Stars: Reimagining Ambition and the Ways We Strive
Author: Rainesford Stauffer
This one is slow going because I, as my therapist puts it, am “addicted” to ambition. I don’t agree with him but we meet weekly and he makes me cry so something is clearly resonating.
Kristin Lavransdatter
Author: Sigrid Undset
This one is slow going because I despise the titular character. I could unabashedly shove her through a wall were she a real person. She’s a soulless crone with atrocious taste in men. Also, the book is 1100 pages. It’s a literal doorstop.
American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer
Authors: Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin
I’m only about fifty pages into this one but the magnitude of the research involved makes it worthy of its Pulitzer. I’ve yet to watch the film, because, well, who’s got three hours? Definitely not me. I’m really excited to have a rainy night and a glass (or bottle) of red while I delve into these pages.
The Revolutionary Samuel Adams
Author: Stacy Schiff
It’s wild to be reading two very different biographies at the same time. Schiff’s voice is dry, academic, erudite. It’s also shockingly feminine. I don’t mean in such a way that belittles her subject matter. I mean, in a way that focuses the camera lens on the relationships that made Samuel Adams who he was.
Crying in H Mart
Author: Michelle Zauner
Oh boy. I picked this up, read the first page, and set it down. I will, likely, binge this on my next plane ride. I love a memoir but I want to be taken on that journey swiftly and efficiently.
Point Made: How to Write Like the Nation’s Top Advocates
Author: Ross Guberman
If you’re not going to be writing legal briefs in your career, maybe skip this one? It’s quite good if you’re trying to become a better legal writer! However, I recognize that is niche.
Theology and Sanity
Author: Frank Sheed
I have been reading this book for at least two years. It’s difficult to even call it reading at this point. It is a dense tome but is the most logical defense of Christian theology I have ever read. (What I’ve read of it, I mean.)
Life Updates
Truly, life is good. I have updates that I’m very excited to share but am hesitant to do so in a public Internet kind of way. If you possess my personal modes of communication, reach out and I’ll spill the tea. If you don’t possess my personal modes of communication, well, you’re definitely welcome here but also probably don’t need to know about my real (read: personal) life, eh?
It’s a joy to read with you. Thank you for your patience!
